Samokish (Самокиш) Nikolai Semenovich (1860—1944)

Russian painter. Born in Nizhyn, Chernigov pr. (Ukraine). Studied at Imperial Academy of Arts 1879-85; in private studios, Paris, 1886-89. Active in St.Petersburg/Petrograd; Rostov-on-Don 1920s; Ukraine and Crimea 1920s-40s. Member of St. Petersburg Society of Artists from 1890 (founder member). Exhibited with Commune of Artists 1920s; AkhRR 1923. Important shows include "Twenty Years of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army" Moscow 1938. Specialized in battle pictures. Taught at Imperial Academy of Arts 1912-17 (head of battle-painting class); at Rostov-on-Don Art School 1920s-30s; at Kharkov Art Institute 1936-41. Became an Active Member of Academy of Arts 1913. Awarded Stalin Prize 1941. Also a grahhic artist, monumentalist. Died in Simferopol 1944.
