Felipe Camino Galicia León (1884—1968)

León Felipe was born in Tábara, Zamora, Spain on April, 1884 and died in Mexico City on September 17, 1968. His real or complete name was León Felipe Camino Galicia. León Felipe was one of the best contemporary poets of Spanish literature who lived the last years of his life in Mexico. He was exiled during the Spanish Civil War in which he fought on the Republican side against the fascist forces.

His poetry touched the difficult Spanish situation and the feeling that history would repeat itself for the worst. His employment of the reiteration or repetition and the use of the verse in the biblical fashion brings him close to the works of Walt Whitman with a biblical and Hebrew flavor (Antología rota, 1947); His poetry also has characteristics of the Modernismo and the Vanguardismo movements (Drop a star, 1933).

Other works of León Felipe are: El payaso de las bofetadas (1938), El hacha (1939), Ganarás la luz (1943), El último publicano (1950), El ciervo (1958). In 1963 his complete works were published.
