Kubin Alfred (1877–1959)

Austrian artist, Alfred Kubin lived mostly in Upper Austria but also did a good deal of traveling. He lived a troubled early life, first attempting suicide on his mother’s grave in 1896 and then later suffering from a mental breakdown after the death of his fiancée. As a friend of Kandinsky, he participated in the 1912 Der Blaue Reiter exhibition but never joined the movement because of differing perceptions of art. He met Odilon Redon in 1905 and his work took on a morbid, nightmarish feel much like Redon’s. Perhaps because of his rocky childhood, Kubin’s work often dealt with the theme of death. He wrote a novel titled Die andere Seite (The Other Side) in 1909 and also illustrated many other books.
