Vančura Vladislav (1891—1942)

Vladislav Vancura, a leading experimental novelist, belonged to the Czech avant garde circle of the 20s and 30s. He was also an outstanding director of inter-war Czech cinema as well as a passionate film enthusiast. In his work such as Capricious Summer, 1926; Marketa Lazarova, 1931 or the unfinished Scenes from the History of the Czech Nation, 1939 Vancura is constantly seeking new forms of expression, creating a distinctive style and a language full of archaisms. Although considered one of the most important Czech personalities of the 20th century, his work is known mainly through film adaptations realised by Frantisek Vlacil (Marketa Lazarova, 1967) and Jiri Menzel (Capricious Summer, 1967).
