Carriego Evaristo(1883—1912)

Poet. Although he never wrote a tango he has a special place in tango history because he was the first poet entirely devoted to writing about everyday life in the neighborhoods of Buenos Aires. As writer Jorge Luis Borges expressed in the biography he wrote about Carriego, the poet was the first spectator poor neighborhoods had. He published “Misas herejes” (“Heretic masses”) in 1908, and “La canción del barrio” (“The neighborhood song”), which appeared in Barcelona one year after his death. His works influenced a lot of tango poets, especially Homero Manzi, as it is possible to see in tangos as “Viejo ciego” (“Old blind man”) and “El último organito” (“The last little pipe organ”) which is a homage to Manzi´s literary predecessor.
