Kanižlić Antun
(1699—1777)

A poet and missionary. He early joined the Jesuit congregation and was educated in Graz, Austria and Trnava, Slovakia. As a missionary he travelled through Croatia, particularly through Slavonia, newly liberated from the Turks. After the dissolution of the Jesuit Congregation, he remained in Požega as a representative and official of the Zagreb Diocese. Working as a missionary he realised the necessity for creating alphabet books, catechisms and other books which would enlighten the folk, educate them and bring literacy; this is why he wrote several popular religious books and prayer books. His prayer books included his religious poems. After his death, his two most important works were printed. The first was "St Rosalind", a religious Baroque poem and in his second book "The Great Stumbling Block", he elaborates on the reasons of the great and tragic schism between the Roman Chatolic and the Orthodox churches.
