Haşdeu Bogdan Petriceicu  (1836—1907)

Writer, philologue, historian, folklorist. He is from an old boyard learned family from Bessarabia. Born near Hotin Fortress, in Cristesti village, son of the nationalist and learned boyard Alexandru Hajdau (1811-1872). Both his father and his grandfather Tadeu have had write, in Russian, but subject from the Romanian univers (national folklore and history). He strated to learn in Poland, where his father was teacher at Vinita and Camenita. He speaks from his childhood Romanian, Polish and Russian. His parents move to Bessarabia where he learn at a high school from Chisinau. University at Harcov studying hardly. Reads a lot. During his military service he takes part at the war from Crimea but he quits the army.

At 19 years old (1857) he came to Moldavia and is judge at Cahul; next director of the library from Iasi (1859-1862); moves to Bucharest, where he edits the review Aghiuta (1863); is deputy (1867); is the director of the State Archieves (1876) and member of the Academy (1877).

In 1865 marries Iulia Falciu and in 1869 is born his daughter Iulia. She is a very bright and talented person, writes good poems in French. But at 19 years old he dies from tuberculosis (1888). This event marks him profoundly and he enters a declining stage. He moves at Campina in a very odd castle where he tries to communicate with his daughter by spiritism practices. He writes Sic cogito (1892) a spiritist philosophy work. Is pesimist and lonely. In 1902 dies he wife and in 1907 himself being burrien between his two beloved Iulia (wife and daughter).

The learned philologue let us valuable scientific works. The most important is the monumental dictionary of the Romanian language Etymologicum Magnum Romaniae (1886-1898), too vaste for one alone, which is accomplished till the letter B, word "barbat". He also wrote Cuvente den batrani (1877-1881), a collection of old Romanian texts and popular books (also unfinished)

He has also important literary works: romantic poems (Poesie, 1873) and Sarcasm si ideal (1897); satirical short story Duduca Mamuca (1863), because of which he was dismissed from education; monography Ioan Voda cel Cumplit (1865), afictionized biography of the voievode compared with Caesar and Napoleon.

His most important literary work is the historical drama Razvan si Vidra (1867).
