Joy Cowley was born in Levin, New Zealand, and now writes children's books from her 135-acre ranch in New Zealand's Marlborough Sounds. She has received New Zealand's Commemorative Medal for service to children's literature and the Order of the British Empire, and in 1993 was awarded an honorary doctor of letters from Massey University.
Joy has written stories, plays, and exercises for the Story Box and Sunshine reading programs that are used internationally. She fills her stories with exciting adventures and whimsical characters, such as Huggles, the Jigaree, and the Meanies. One of her best known characters is Mrs. Wish-Washy, made popular by the book, Mrs. Wishy-Washy (The Wright Group), which has sold more than 40 million copies.
Joy's novels and picture books regularly receive top honors, and her children's novel, The Silent One, has been made into a film shown on the Disney Channel. The Silent One and Bow Down Shadrach both have won the New Zealand Children's Book of the Year Award, and The Cheese Trap won the Picture Book of the Year Award in 1996
Joy's publishing credits also include adult novels and short stories. In 1996 she and her husband, photographer Terry Coles, collaborated on a book of spiritual reflections.
In her spare time Joy enjoys knitting, spinning, and weaving; fishing and boating; and model trains. She's also an avid roller coaster fan.
