Sekora Ondrzhei (1899—1967) «Adventures of Ant Ferda»«Ferda mravenec doma a v cizích službách»

Ondrej Sekora is still known by generations of Czech children for his endearing animal characters, especially Ferda the Ant. Initially, he became a law student before enlisting at the Art Academy in Prague in 1929. By the time he graduated in 1931, he was already working as an editor and cartoonist for newspaper Lidové Noviny. During the 1930s, he made many political cartoons about the Germans and Soviets, as well as sports cartoons, being an enthusiastic soccer and rugby player himself. After the Munich agreement, when Czechia became a protectorate, Ondrej Sekora had to give up his journalistic career. He was excluded from the journalist's federation and ended up in a labor camp in 1944/45.

His most famous character, Ferda Mravenec (Ferda the Ant), appeared for the first time in 1935, and immediately became very popular. Ondrej Sekora also made books about other animals, such as Napipi the Chicken and Aninka the Bumblebee. Sekora's work is still well known in Czechia and outside, and Ferda the Ant has even been depicted on a postage stamp.
