Hansen Emil Christian
(1842—1909)
Botanist, mycologist and microbiologist. Originally trained as a house painter and primary school teacher. Employed as a fermentation physiologist at the Carlsberg Laboratories, Copenhagen, 1877. Director of the physiological department of the Carlsberg Laboratories from 1879 to 1909. Apart from numerous original and review papers on yeast and fermentation, ECH has written a large work on fungi on dung and a number of other mycological papers, mainly on ascomycetes. In 1883 Hansen develops a method for propagating pure yeast, which revolutionises the brewing industry. The yeast is named Saccharomyces Carlsbergensis and given freely to the world.
