Opie John
(1761—1807)
The portrait and history painter John Opie was introduced to London in 1781 as 'the Cornish Wonder'. His style as a portraitist was marked by strong realism and by striking contrasts of light and dark. He achieved great popularity in the 1780's and was elected to the Royal Academy. He was also known as a painter of historical and literary subjects, especially for Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery.
