Orme Daniel
(1767—circa 1832)

English painter, born in Manchester on 25 August 1766. His father John was a merchant but, despite this background, Daniel was encouraged in his choice of profession. Indeed, both his brothers, William and David, also became painters. In March 1785 Daniel enrolled at the Royal Academy schools, where he trained as an engraver. He remained in London as an engraver and miniature painter until 1814, when he moved back to his native Manchester. He continued, however, to exhibit regularly at the Royal Academy until 1827. He reached a wider audience through his training as an engraver, publishing engravings of both his own and other people’s paintings. He tended to produce popular images of military heroes of the day. He died in Buxton, Derbyshire.
