Pescatore Jean-Pierre
(1793—1855)
Born in Luxembourg in 1793, Jean-Pierre Pescatore was a very colourful Luxembourg personality. A semi-literate volunteer in the Grand Army at the age of 16, tobacco manufacturer at 21, he left for Paris to become a banker under Louis-Philippe. Fortune smiled on him very quickly and he became very rich and was able to devote considerable resources to hunting for orchids and to viticulture. Enriched, ambitious, and influenced by his times, Pescatore was not only known for his sense of charity, but also for having assembled an impressive art collection that included a huge number of objects, sculptures, and paintings which included several masterpieces. Upon his death in 1855, Pescatore bequeathed his collection to the town of Luxembourg and made available the necessary capital to create a nursing home for the elderly. This was the origin of the Museum and the J.-P. Pescatore Foundation.
