Philatelia.Net / Bonapart / Plots / The directory «Plots of stamps in the catalogue»The Sloboda PalaceSituated in Nemetskaya Sloboda (the Settlement for foreign people) and described in Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace in connection with the appeal of Emperor Alexander I to Moscow's aristocrats and merchants to defend the motherland against Napoleon, the palace itself built by J. Quarenghi and M. Kazakov was a treasure to Moscow. Unfortunately, in1812, two months after that patriotic assembly, the palace burnt down. The walls of the palace were once again erected, this time by D. Zhilyardi, another famous architect of Moscow. The building created then, was meant to be a boarding school resembling a cadet school, where mechanical arts were to flourish. Even now a splendid white stone sculptural group by I. Vitali over the main entrance to Bauman Moscow State Technical University is an eloquent demonstration of the significance attached to craftsmanship. The central figure of the sculpture is Goddess of Wisdom Minerva, the patroness of arts and science. Russia, 2005, Sloboda palace Russia, 2005.07.01, Moskow.
