Malmaison

Malmaison

While home to Napoleon Bonaparte and the seat of French government for many years, Malmaison can never be thought of without adding the name Josephine.

Bonaparte's first wife and empress made the magnificent chateau her own with restorations and the creation of a famous rose garden.

Malmaison was bought by Josephine in 1799 and while Bonaparte lived and campaigned elsewhere, it was her favoured home.

When she was divorced from the emperor in 1809, Josephine took up permanent residence and spent the years until her death in 1814 improving Malmaison.

Today, Malmaison is a museum with fine examples of Napoleonic art, personal items of Bonaparte and Josephine, as well as historical furniture and items of clothing.
