Popov (Попов) Andrey Alexandrovich (1821—1898)

Admiral (1891), Adjutant General (1871). Graduated from the Naval Cadet School (1837). In 1837-38 entered service with the Baltic Fleet. In 1838, was transferred to the Black Sea Fleet, took part in the Crimean War of 1853-56. In 1855, promoted to the rank of Aide-de-Camp. In 1856-58, Chief of Staff of Kronstadt Port, where he supervised the building of 14 screw corvettes and 14 clippers. In 1858-64, served in the Pacific, in 1862-64, with his squadron, made a voyage to San-Francisco (USA). From 1861, member of the Central Shipbuilding Engineering and Marine Academic Committees. In 1869 Popov’s project was used to built Cruiser monitor, renamed Peter the Great in 1872 in celebration of Peter’s bicentennial. In 1870-72 he planned the construction in St. Petersburg of the first ironclad ocean cruiser, named General Admiral. In 1876 Popov was appointed member of the Admiralty Council. He authored the floating battery project, which was to have a circular shaped hull (the so called popovka). From 1888, Popov served as head of the Shipbuilding Department of the Naval Engineering Committee.
