Eliza Orzeszkowa, Polish novelist, was born near Hrodna (present Belarus), of the noble family of Pawłowski. In her sixteenth year she married Piotr Orzeszko, a Polish nobleman, who was exiled to Siberia after the insurrection of 1863.
