Delavrancea Barb
(1858—1918)
Stefanescu-Delavrancea Barb reasserts the principle of naturalism imported by Caragiale Ion Luca supplying in his short-stories physical and moral information on the character (in Zobie, Bilogul, Trubadurul) or negative effects of some social evils (in Parazitii, Hagi-Tudose). In Hagi-Tudose he treats the theme of upstart ness and the prototype of the miner in a naturalist manner. The hero is a pathological "care", his passion for money dehumanizes him. Delavrancea continues by his trilogy Apus de soare, Viforul, Luceafarul - his historical theatre written around 1848 by Alecsandri and Hasdeu. In a romantic vision, mixing lyrist with dramatic scenes he époques artistically moments from the reigns of the following rulers: Stefan, Stefanita-Voda, Petru-Rares. The heroes are exceptional, acting in exceptional circumstances and the author analyses both their behavior and their character. The play Apus de soare is the most important and it is a special achievement as an historical drama outlining a literary character as an ideal of liberty and notional independence of his people.
