Campo Estanislao del
(1834—1880)
Estanislao del Campo was an Argentine poet. Born in Buenos Aires within an unitarian family, he fought in Cepeda and Pavón battles, defending Buenos Aires' rights. The unitarians were a political party favoring a strong central government, in opposition to the federalists. He is best remembered by his 1866 satirical poem Fausto, which describes a gaucho's impressions during the performance of Charles Gounod's opera. He also published his Collected Poems in 1870/
