Oña Pedro de
(1570—1643)
Chilean poet. Having been born in Latin America, he is considered Chile's first national poet. His poetry is both epic and religious. Inspired by La aravcana, by Alonso de Ercilla y Zúñiga, he wrote the epic Arauco domado (1596; tr. Arauco Tamed, 1948). Other works include El vasauro (1635), a religious poem, and El Ignacio de Cantabria (1639), a pious work celebrating St. Ignatius of Loyola.
