Kranjčević Silvije Strahimir
(1865—1908)
Silvije Strahimir Kranjčević was a Croatian poet. He was born in Senj. He studied to become a teacher and in 1886 passed the appropriate exam in Zagreb. However, he couldn't get appointment in Croatia, so he had to teach in Bosnia and Herzegovina, at times occupied by Austria-Hungary. He served in Mostar, Livno, Bijeljina and Sarajevo, where he died. His poetry was important because it represented shift from Romantic and nationalist to more universal themes in Croatian literature. Kranjčević in his work expressed deep frustration with social and any other injustice in the world. He was also known for his anti-clericalism.
