López Velarde Ramón
(1888—1921)
Ramón López Velarde is a key figure in the trajectory of Mexican poetry, bridging the experimentation of the late nineteenth-century Latin Amerian modernismo and the avant garde of the 1920s. The contrast between city and hometown, between urban and pastoral landscapes is repeated in the dichotomy of López Velarde’s willing surrender to the pleasures of the flesh and his reverence for an idealized woman often represented in the figure of Fuensanta, the unsullied love of his youth. Through all his poems run the threads of religious faith, patriotism, and a contemplative sense of history.
