German novelist and antifascist activist, the author of influential novels such as Vaterlandslose Gesellen. Das erste Kriegsbuch eines Arbeiters (1930) and Maulwürfe. Ein deutscher Bauernroman (1933), which he wrote while in exile in Prague.
