Schneider Reinhold (1903—1958)

Writer, born in Freiburg, Breisgau, SW Germany. Having travelled widely in Europe, he settled in Potsdam and took up writing. He converted to Catholicism in 1938 and continued to publish illegally after having been forbidden to publish in 1940 due to the role he adopted in the Catholic resistance movement. He voiced his opposition to the National Socialists in his short story Las Casas vor Karl V (1938). After World War 2 he wrote extensively, and was awarded several literary prizes for his essays, short stories, and plays, including the Friedenpreis des Deutschen Buchhandels in 1956.
