Odobescu Alexandru
(1834—1895)
Odobescu Alexandru was a representative personality of the period after 1848, he was the first scientist writer from Romanian literature until the beginning of the 20th century. He published a lot of historical and archeological studies reaching the top with the famous «Treasure from Pietroasa» (1889). In 1877 appeared «Archoeological History». Romantic on account of his passion for the past, he realized in literature two short-stories in Negruzzi’s manner: «Mihnea Voda cel Rau» in 1857 illustrating the type of the feudal tyrant, revengeful with his rivals; «Doamna Chiajna» in 960 presenting an outlined character who removes all obstacles to see her ambitious fulfilled. Excellent printer of local color he describes traditions, clothes, royal courts. Manolescu N. places Odobescu in Istoria critica a literaturii romane (Critical History of Romanian Literature) in the chapter Proza academica si savanta (Academically and scientist prose), seeing in him the founder of the intellectual, refined prose, of the essay. Using his erudition Odobescu presented in an essay-like manner dissertations on the famous universal works of painting, sculpture or music which illustrated the hunting. Al Odobescu creates an unique, refined writing , characterized by an impeccably classic style.
