Bacovia George (1881—1957)

George Bacovia (the pen name of George Vasiliu) was a Romanian Symbolist poet. It was said that he is, by formation, a symbolist, but he over come his epoch, he belongs to the Romanian modern poetry. He is tightly bounded to his native town Bacau, were he was born in 1881, as a trader. His real name is George Vasiliu. Elementary and secondary school in Bistrita; higher education, in law, at Bucharest and Iasi, with licence. He never was a lawer, he was a clerk, having a hard life but dedicated to poetry. He was always harrassed by illness - fact reflected in his sombre poems. In 1928 he marries Agatha Grigorescu and moves to Bucharest were his wife was a techer (she wrote a very detailed and illustrated biography). He debuted in Macedonski's Literatorul, but his first volume Plumb was edited in 1916 (was awarded by the Ministry of Arts). Other volumes are not edited very often: Scântei galbene (1926), Comedii în fond (1936), Stante burgheze (1946). His lirics are very original, creating the so called bacovian atmosphere. It is always raining, the leaves are falling, ravens are flying in the air, on the streets are funeral processions, the lovers are ill, the children are weak, the bodies are decomposing, all around is mourning, cough, agony, death. He dies in May 1957 in his home from Bucharest. The nightingales were singing in the apple tree near the window. His devoted wife was holding his hand...
