Goretski (Гарэцкi) Maxim Ivanovich
(1893—1939)
Belarusian writer, literature critic, folklorist, lexicographist. Born in the village of Malaya Bogatkovka, Mstislav raion, Mogilev oblast, in the family of a peasant. Graduated from Geogetic-and- Agronomical Gory School (1913), Pavlovsk Military School in Petrograd (1916). In 1913-1914 he worked as a land surveyor in Vilno. His first publications appeared in the newspaper "Nasha niva". The first book of collected stories, "Winter Crop", was published in 1914. Since October, 1923, he lived in Belarus, taught the Belarusian language and literature. Since 1928 he was engaged in scientific research work in the Institute of Belarusian Culture and the Academy of Sciences of Belarus. In 1931 he was subjected to repression and exiled to Vyatka. In 1937 he was subjected to repression again. Died in a prison in 1939. The author of the "History of Belarusian Literature", "Russian-Belarusian Dictionary" (together with G. Goretski), "Practical Moscow-Belarusian Dictionary", a number of books of collected stories.
