(1470—1533)
Mikola Gusovki was a poet-humanist and enlightener of the Renaissance, the activist of Slav culture. Originated from the family of a hunter. Graduated in Belarus, obtained post-graduate education in Vilno, Poland, Italy. A great role in his faith was played by the patron of arts E. Vitelly, Secretary of the Office of the Great Principality, the Bishop of Polotsk. In 1518 he visited Rome as a stuff member of the diplomatic mission, headed by Vitelly. He created his best work, "Carmen de statura, feritate ac venatione bisontis" ("Song about Carriage, Wildness of Aurochs and about Hunting It") as a fulfillment of the order of the Pope Leo X, who wished to hear the true poetic word about hunting the aurochs. In 1523 he published in Krakov the book of poetry collection, "Song about the Aurochs" that included the dedication in prose, the poem of the same name and 11 verses. This book is an artistic-and-historical anthem to the beauty of Belarusian land.
