Kolas (Колас) Jakub
(the pen-name of Konstantin Mikhailovich Mitskevich)

Jakub Kolas was a classic of Belarusian literature, the founder (together with Janka Kupala) of the modern Belarusian literature and Belarusian literature language, People's Poet of Belarus (1926), Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus (1928), Honored Worker of Arts of Belarus (1944). Born in the village of Akinchitsy, Minsk district, in the family of a forest-guard. Educated in the Nikolay School, then graduated from the Nesvizh Teachers Training Seminary. In 1906 he published his first verses in Belarusian, entitled "Our Native Parts". The author of the biographical trilogy "On the Crossroads", of the poem "New Land" (1923), "Symon the Musician" (1925), "Court in the Forest" (1943), "Fisherman's Hut" (1941-1947)", of the novels "On the Scopes of Life" (1925-1926), "Quag" (1933) etc., of the books of collected verses and short stories.
