Cortés Alfonso
(1893—1969)

Alfonso Cortes was born in Leon in 1893. He fell victim to mental illness at the age of thirty. Part of his childhood was spent in the city of his birth and a good portion of his life was spent in mental institutions, both in Nicaragua and in Costa Rica. His poetry emerged, in fact, from his subconscious ideas, relating to questions about existence, death and space. He wrote countless poems, however it is generally believed that the best of these were written during his youth. His best known work includes La Canción de los Astros y un Detalle, which Jose Coronel Urtecho later called Ventana. Most of his poems were collected by Ernesto Cardenal into a book called 30 Poemas de Alfonso, published in Managua in 1952. Alfonso Cortes died in 1969, at the age of 76.
