Zmaj (Çìàj) Jovan Jovanovic
(1833—1904)
Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj was a poet, an editor of a literary newpaper and a doctor. He developed himself (into a seaf-directing) poet under the influence of popular poetry written by Branko Radicevic, German romaticists, and Hungarian poet S. Petef. He becomes very early one of the most popular poets of Sebian middle class. Troutg his lines he promoted the ideas of his time and the ideas of Miletic’s national political party. Being an active social worker, a great talent and creator he was the poetical expression of the spiritual and social life of Serbian people from 1850 to 1900. Being a lirical poet, he wrole about happy and misfortnale moments of his family life in his books: "Ðulici" and "Ðulici uveoci", He wrote inumerouns number of political and satirical poems. That poetry had a great influence on the development of nacional and bourgeoise consciousness. He is the founder of children’s poetry in our country. He organized and edited a literary newspaper called "Javor" ("Maple"), satirical newspaper "Zmaj" ("Dragon"), "Ziza" ("Sturmali"), and children’s newspaper "Neven" ("Marigold"). He did the translations from Hungarion, German, Russion and English. He wrote prose as well (poetic legend of V.D) and he even wrote a play (a comical play called "saran" – Carp)
