Racin (Рацин) Kočo
(1908—1943)
A poet and revolutionary, was the founder of the modern Macedonian literature. He was born 1908 in Veles, and during his early years he worked as a potter. During this time he also joined the Macedonian revolutionary struggle. His poetry appeared between the two world wars, while the norms of the Macedonian literary language were being established. One could hear for the first time the extremely difficult situation in Macedonia, the sorrow of its people, but also the hope for better and happier days. A collection of his poems "White Dawns" was published in Macedonia in 1939. With this work, Macedonian poetry immediately reached a high artistic level. The importance of Racin's poetry, not only this collection, but all his poetry, is of extreme importance to the Macedonian people. His poetry is considered a significant contribution towards the struggle of the Macedonian's for their national and cultural development.
