Prežihov Voranc
(1893—1950)
Prežihov Voranc - with real name Lovro Kuhar - is considered one of the greatest Slovene writers. He is a representative of the social or neo-realism in the Slovene literature after World War II, poet of Carinthia and revolutionary. His novels "Doberdob", "Požganica" and "Jamnica", and the collection of short stories "Samorastniki" (Self-made men") are epics distinguished for their monumentality, broad panoramic frescoes depicting the world and communities of people. His characters are vehement, firm and indomitable. His political and literary work is closely connected with the tragic struggle for Carinthia during the plebiscite in 1920. His last book "Solzice" (Lilies of the valley) is one of the most beautiful juvenile books in the Slovene literature.
It is an artistically perfect revelation of the author's love of his mother, his mother tongue and homeland, his sympathy for the suffering and his close connectedness with the nature and his homeland. Voranc is a peculiar and almost legendary personality of the Slovene culture and national identity.
