Kosovel Srečko
(1904—1926)

Kosovel is one of the most prominent representatives of the Slovenian "historical avant-garde". Apart from poems, he also wrote sketches, lyrical prose, essays, articles and literary criticism. In a relatively short period of time (he died at the age of 22), Kosovel wrote many texts but only a few were published, mostly in literary magazines. He did not manage to publish his collection The Golden Boat. Most of his poetry was published posthumously – Poems in 1927 and Selected Poems in 1931. Kosovel's early work continued the tradition of Slovenian modernist poets, in particular Kette and Murn, and had much in common with impressionism. Kosovel is an impressionist in particular when he writes about the Slovenian Karst. But even in these poems impressionism blends with expressionist elements. His expressionist lyrics deals with the existence of an individual, death, destruction of the European civilization and the metamorphosis of the world. Kosovel was familiar with the European avant-garde streams, futurism and constructivism. In the last years of his life, he created a number of surrealist constructions - Cons, which due to their late publication (Integrals – 1967, Collected Works – from 1964 to 1977), influenced Slovenian modernist poets after WWII who found in Srečko Kosovel their contemporary.
