German (Герман) Yury Pavlovich
(1910—1967)
Yury Pavlovich German was a prolific writer, dramatist and screenwriter. He is best known abroad for his stories Lapshin (1937) and Aleksei Zhmakin (Alexei the Gangster, 1938), both about virtuous OGPU (Unified State Political Administration) agents tracking down criminals. In 1947, he was awarded the Stalin Prize for his screenplay for Pirogov, directed by Grigory Kozintsev.
