Nasyri (Насыри) Kayum (1825—1902)

Kayum Nasyri was born on February 14, 1825 in Verkhniye Shirdany village, in Sviyazhsky region of the Kazan province (nowadays Zelenodolsky region). He received elementary education at his father's school. In 1841 Nasyri started to study at Kazan madrasah where he learnt the Arabian, Persian and Russian languages.

In 1855-1870 he taught the Tatar language in the Kazan religious school. In the following years he was engaged in teaching Russian grammar to the Tatar children. Since 1879 K.Nasyri completely devoted his life to literary and scientific activity. Alongside with the works of art he created fundamental works on linguistics, mathematics, geography, history, ethnography and folk medicine. During 24 years K.Nasyri issued an annual desk calendar in Tatar in which lots of scientific and literary materials were published. Therefore K.Nasyri is considered to be the first Tatar encyclopaedist.

Nasyri died on September 2, 1902. Architectural and ethnographic museum named after K.Nasyri was opened on March 1, 1997 in Bolshye Achasary settlement of Zelenodolsky region.
