Oles (Îëåñü) Alexander Ivanovich
(1878—1944)
The great Ukrainian poet, who translated into Ukrainian Longfellow's "Hiawatha." Among his poetic collections are "Z zhurboyu radist obnymalas" — With Sadness Joy Embraced, "Komu povim pechal moyu" — To Whom Can I Tell About My Woes, and others (nine poetry books altogether). Oleksandr Oles also created several dramatic works.
He died in emigration in Prague in 1944.
