Bering Vitus Pedersen
(1617—1675)

Danish poet, writer and Royal historiographer. The portrait of him was for a long time taken to be a portrait of navigator Vitus Jonassen Bering. After Bering's exhumation in 1991 and a subsequent forensic investigation, it is now accepted that it is a portrait of the Danish writer Vitus Pedersen Bering, an uncle to Bering's mother of the explorer.
