Tatarka Dominik (1913–1989)

One of the most prominent 20-century Slovak writers, Dominik Tatarka, studied French and Slovak in Prague and Paris, and then he worked as a high-school professor. He took part in the Slovak National Uprising of 1944, after the liberation he was a newspaper editor, the chief art editor in the Tatran publishing house and a screenwriter of the Czechoslovak Film Company in Bratislava. Since 1964 he was a professional writer. He adopted an uncompromising attitude to the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact armies in 1968, for which he was persecuted by the Communist regime. He could not publish and for 20 years he was practically barred from public life. He was among the signatories to the Charter 77.
