The first Lithuanian public theatre play "Amerika pirtyje" (America In the Baths) by Keturakis was performed in Palanga on 20 August 1899. It started an active development of national self-consciousness in Lithuania. The organizers of this play G.Petkevičaitė-Bitė, L.Vaineikis, G.Jakševičiūtė, P.Viscinis, A.Janulaitis were persecuted by the czarist authorities and exiled to Siberia. After the performance of this play the amateurish theatre popularizing national patriotic ideas and civil value of mother tongue has spread incredibly fast.
