Van Loo Louis-Michel
(1707—1771)
Born on 2 March 1707 in Toulon, the nephew of Carle van Loo and son of J.-B. van Loo (1684 1745) under whom he studied in Turin, Rome and Paris. He won the prix de Rome in 1725 (Moïse enfant faisant tomber la couronne de Pharaon; lost) and returned to Rome in 1728, accompanied by Boucher, his uncle and brother François. He returned to Paris in 1730 and was reçu by the Académie in 1733 (Apollo and Daphne; Ecole des Beaux-Arts). He was in Turin 1733-4 and worked in Madrid as Painter to Philip V of Spain 1738-52. He exhibited at the Salon 1753-69 and painted several portraits for Versailles between 1759 and 1770. He visited London in 1764 and succeeded his uncle as head of the Ecole royale des élèves protégés in 1765. Though principally a portrait painter, he also painted historical and mythological subjects. He died in Paris on 20 March 1778.
