Eucken Rudolf Christoph
(1846–1926)
German philosopher, studied at Göttingen and Berlin. He taught philosophy at Basel and became professor of philosophy at Jena (1874). His work attained wide popularity, and he won the 1908 Nobel Prize in Literature. In 1912 he lectured at Harvard. His philosophy, known as activism, stressed personal ethical effort rather than intellectual idealism. English translations of his work include The Truth of Religion (1901), The Life of the Spirit (1909), and Knowledge and Life (1913).
