Tavčar Ivan
(1851—1923)
Ivan Tavčar, a lawyer, politician and one of the greatest Slovene storytellers published his first literary works in school newsletters. His short prose pieces from the aristocratic circles express his idea that love is the tragic essence of the world. The cycle «Med gorami» (Among the Mountains) gives realistic descriptions of peasant life. His idea of tragic love is best captured in his most important novel «Visoška kronika» (The Chronicle from Visoko) and in the idyllic story «Cvetje v jeseni» (Flowers in Autumn).
The latter was the basis for the stamp design, which is best explained by the designer himself: «With the film adaptation of his novel Flowers in Autumn, Ivan Tavčar entered practically every Slovene home. In autumn there is a tradition in Slovenia to prepare jam. Visually jam is best symbolized by a big jam jar. The jar on the stamp symbolizes Tavčar's Flowers in Autumn in two ways: through the autumn flowers inside the jar and the sticker describing its contents on the outside.»
