Bārda Fricis
(1880—1919)
Latvian poet. Infinity, God, love, and the relationship between the mind and the soul are topics that dominate Bārda’s texts. Both his poetry and his philosophical essays incorporate the most essential elements of Western Romanticism, such as the notions of the divine unity of the world and of the multiple manifestations of life. These notions are also central to the Far Eastern traditions that commanded a lot of attention during the Romanticism period. New facets of F. Bārda’s work emerge if one considers the influences stemming from his familiarising with the Indian and Chinese cultures, and, in particular, with their Zen-Buddhist elements.
