Brlić Mažuranić Ivana (1874—1938) Fairy Tales

Ivana Brlić Mažuranić was born in Ogulin on April 18th 1874 in the prominent family Mažuranić. The genuine attention to her work was accomplished in 1913 with the children’s novel The Mervelous Adventures and Misadventures of Hlapic the apprentice, while her most successful work is considered to be the tale collection Tales of Long ago (1916), by which she rapidly gained the title “the Croatian Andersen”. Her imagination was playful; she was in touch with Slavic mythology and created unforgettable characters with magical names like Vjest, Ljutiša, Potjeh, Stribor, Malik, Tinilinić, Kosjenka. Many of her characters became synonyms for people’s moral and emotional characteristics.

Renowned by Croatian and foreign critics, she entered the Croatian literary world as the best children’s writer. Translated into all major world languages.
