Raspe Rudolf Erich
(1737—1794)
«The Surprising Adventures Of Baron Munchausen»
«Geschichten vom Baron Münchhausen»
Rudolf Erich Raspe is best known for his collection of tall tales: «The Surprising Adventures Of Baron Munchausen». He was born in Hannover, studied science and philology and worked as a librarian for several universities before having to flee to England in 1775 after pilfering some gems that were supposedly in his care. In 1791 he had to move again (to Ireland) after his involvement in a mining swindle in Scotland. He died in County Kerry, Ireland in 1794.
His career is interesting because of his connection with the famous book of stories of Baron Munchausen. His authorship was not known in his lifetime, except to his friend Gottfried August Burger and possibly a few of his other intimates in his student days at Gottingen; and it was not till 1824 that the biographer of Burger (who had been credited with writing Munchausen instead of only translating it, as he did in 1786) revealed the truth about the book.
