Anne Hogarth (1910-1993)
«Muffin the Mule»
Muffin the Mule first appeared on For the Children in 1946, his strings pulled by Ann Hogarth, while Annette Mills sang and played the piano. Shortly after, they were given a whole programme and, with other characters including Sally the sealion, Louise the lamb and Monty the monkey, rapidly became a favourite on children's television. After the death of Annette Mills, sister of actor Sir John Mills, Muffin breifly moved to ITV before returning for a final series with the BBC in 1957. With her husband Jan Bussell, Ann Hogarth travelled the world with the Hogarth puppets, whose productions ranged from ballet and circus to a cubist version of Macbeth.
