Rentoul Annie and Rentoul Outhwait Ida
«Elves and Fairies»
Ida Rentoul Outhwaite became well-known as an illustrator of children's books, especially fairy stories. She was the creator of delicate illustrations of fairies and fairyland, and the leading illustrator of the genre during the first part of the twentieth century. She had an international reputation and exhibited in Paris and London as well as Australia.
She had a regular comic strip, 'Benjamin Bear' in the Melbourne Weekly Time. Her paintings are represented in galleries in Melbourne and Hobart. She created stained-glass windows for St Mark's Church, Fitzroy, a suburb of Melbourne.
Annie, the sister of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, wrote stories and verse for children which Ida illustrated. Although she was less well-known than her sister, whose delicate illustrations complemented her ethereal transformation of the Australian landscape into a traditional fairy land, Annie was a more productive writer.
