Cíger-Hronský Jozef (1896—1960) Books for children

Writer, originally teacher. He entered the service of "Matica slovenská" in 1933 and was editor of the magazine "Slniečko". From 1933 he was the organisation's secretary, and from 1940 to 1945 its administrator. He was responsible for the establishment of the "Neografia" printing house. Emigrating in 1945, he was president of the Slovak National Council Abroad and honorary president of the League of Slovak Writers and Artists Abroad. In 1959 he founded "Matica slovenská" abroad. His last domicile was Argentina.

As a writer he made his début with the "U nás" collection and the prose work for children, "Najmladší Závodský". His short stories and the novels"Chlieb" and "Jozef Mak" captured social conflicts in the village. He introduced innovative lyrical elements and compositional experimentation into Slovak literary realism ("Pisár Gráč") . In the interwar years he added to his work for children ("Smelý zajko", "Budkáčik a Dubkáčik", "Zlaté hodinky"). In emigration he finished and - in 1948 - published his novel "Andreas Búr Majster" which represents the apex of so-called "lyrical prose".
