La Tour Maurice-Quentin de
(1704-1788)
Maurice-Quentin De La Tour was the son of a musician who disapproved of his painting career. He left home at fifteen to study in Paris with a Flemish painter and then became a portraitist in England. After returning to Paris in the mid-1720’s, De La Tour began working in the pastel medium. He exhibited at the Salon from 1738 to 1763 and became a member of the Academie Royale in 1746. De La Tour was appointed portraitist to the king in 1750, which established his reputation among the royalty and upper middle class. Towards the end of his life, he founded and art school and became a philanthropist before begin confined to his home because of mental illness.
